Diversity

After moving back to NYC a few weeks ago, I have been deeply inspired by the city’s incredible diversity. Its mix of cultures and backgrounds makes NYC vibrant like no other city. The energy is palpable and contagious, sparking motivation in all of us.

It’s the kind of motivation anyone wants to bring into the workplace. But how do we set our bias aside?

In the 1970s, symphonic orchestras began conducting blind auditions behind a curtain to select candidates solely based on musical skills. This helped substantially increase the number of women musicians hired.

Every day, in just a fraction of a second, we make snap judgments about each other. When we interview, these judgments happen, causing us to overlook the candidate’s competencies. And as the saying goes, ‘You never get a second chance to make a first impression.’

As leaders, we are responsible for implementing checks and balances to avoid hiring only people like ourselves.
