Leadership and Delegation
I have previously discussed the importance of delegation. It is a key component in the leadership toolbox. Delegating is the best way to grow our team. And we know most collaborators expect professional development from their boss.
Nevertheless, delegating remains a challenge for most leaders. Often, the responsibilities we have not yet passed on are the ones we think are the most crucial to the success of the business, tasks that demand our eye for detail, expertise, or creativity. In some cases, they might also be the tasks we most enjoy.
There are, however, undeniable moments when no other solutions stand, particularly when your plate is simply too full. Our days are not expendable, and our responsibilities must fit within 24-hour, and ideally leave room for life beyond work. Too much not only triggers stress but reduces our capacity for strategic thinking and vision.
Have you hired smart people? Do you have strong team members who possess the business acumen, understanding of the vision and creativity to make decision in your place?
The key enablers for successful delegation include:
- Training to build competence
- Clear communication of expectations
- Well-defined goals or metrics to measure progress and success
- Autonomy.
Delegation can be a gradual process starting with collaboration to smoothly transition responsibility. I still see to many leaders struggle with control resulting in micro-management. This behavior is rightfully perceived as a lack trust. It damages relationships and slows down business efficiency.
Mastering delegation early in your career is crucial. It prepares you for the next critical step: hiring and leading team members who are more skilled than you.
