Among the many leadership approaches, coaching has always been my favorite. When I first earned my coaching certification from NYU, I was eager to launch my practice. The corporate world had other plans. So, beginning with my team, I incorporated coaching into my daily leadership. Today, I aim to democratize coaching and make it an essential part of every leader’s toolkit.
1. What is coaching?
Coaching is a science-based, personalized approach to developing individuals and unlocking their full potential.
It changes behaviors, clarifies values and purpose, strengthens communication, and enhances emotional intelligence.
It improves decision-making, confidence, and relationships.
Most importantly, it creates the breakthroughs that telling alone cannot. Coaching isn’t about giving answers, it’s about helping people find their own.
When leaders coach their teams, those teams, in turn, coach others. Progress becomes contagious.
2. How does coaching work?
Unlike training, coaching is an ongoing partnership that creates sustainable change.
It helps leaders find their unique way to lead, make decisions, and motivate their teams.
At its core, coaching follows a simple framework:
Ask powerful, open-ended questions to set clear goals
Build a plan, adjusting as needed
Commit through regular one-on-one conversations
Celebrate progress and encourage growth.
3. Who is coaching for?
Coaching is not for underperformance or “fixing” people—it’s for elevating your best talents.
It’s for those ready for their next chapter: your high potentials, future leaders, and motivated performers.
You can’t coach someone who isn’t willing. That’s non-negotiable.
The best employees seek coaching, not because they’re broken, but because they want to grow.
Coaching has too often been reserved for a select few. Yet, development is one of the main reasons people choose to stay in their organizations. Creating a thriving culture takes time, and coaching plays a crucial role. Leaders must wear many hats: manager (tasks), trainer (skills), leader (vision), and coach (development). The coaching hat is often the most overlooked—yet it may be the one that makes the biggest difference.
